A Festive Blend of Traditions, Generosity and Family

Christmas is a nearly universal celebration that transcends borders, cultures, and traditions. However, the way it is observed can vary significantly from one place to another. In the Philippines, particularly in Cebu, Christmas is not just a holiday; it’s a spectacular season filled with unique customs, gift-giving, and a profound emphasis on the importance of family. Let’s explore the charm of Christmas in Cebu and how it captivates the hearts of locals and visitors.

Christmas in Cebu, as in the rest of the Philippines, typically begins early in September. This early start to the season is known as the “Ber months,” signaling the start of a festive atmosphere that builds anticipation for the holiday. From the moment these months arrive, you’ll see decorations, hear piped-in Christmas carols, and feel the season’s warmth in the air.

One of Cebu’s most cherished Christmas traditions is Simbang Gabi, also known as the Misa de Gallo. This tradition involves a series of nine dawn masses held from December 16th to December 24th. Attending these masses is a spiritual commitment that brings families together and prepares them for the birth of Jesus. After mass, it’s common to enjoy a feast of traditional Filipino delicacies like bibingka and puto bumbong.

Puto bumbong, a purple rice cake steamed in bamboo tubes, is a delightful and distinctive treat that Cebuanos enjoy during Christmas. This sweet and sticky delicacy is often served with butter and muscovado sugar, providing a unique taste of the season. It’s a favorite among children and adults, often paired with hot chocolate or coffee. Arguably, the best puto bumbong in town has been a menu staple at Café Laguna, which has numerous branches around the metro.

Christmas in Cebu is a time of generosity and giving. The exchange of gifts is a significant part of many holiday celebrations. Many Cebuanos look forward to the act of giving and receiving presents. It’s not just about the material value of the gifts but the thought and love behind them. Those inclined to splurge can look forward to The Mall | Nustar, which will unveil its international luxury brand collection by the end of 2023.

In addition to exchanging gifts with friends and family, it’s common for Cebuanos to extend their generosity to those in need during Christmas. Charity events, gift-giving programs, and community outreach efforts are prevalent, showcasing the spirit of compassion and goodwill that characterizes Christmas in Cebu. Last year saw the introduction of the Light the World Giving Machines in Ayala Mall. These giving-focused vending machines offered a unique and memorable way to share food, hygiene kits, educational materials and resources, water treatment, emergency and repair kits, vitamins, eyeglasses, medical kits, gardening tools, and psychosocial support.

While gift-giving is a central part of Christmas in Cebu, the most cherished aspect of the celebration is the gathering of family members. Filipinos place a high value on the bonds they share with their loved ones, and Christmas is when family members come together to celebrate, reminisce, and create new memories. The most important of these gatherings is Noche Buena – the lavish midnight dinner on Christmas Eve. It’s a time for laughter, storytelling, and expressions of love as families strengthen their connections and celebrate the true meaning of Christmas. While Noche Buena is traditionally spent at home, restaurants and hotels throughout Cebu run holiday specials that fit every mood and budget. As of this writing, it is still too early to delve into specifics, but we are sure that Fili Hotel’s luxury Sunday buffets will have extra special treats as December 24th falls on such a day this year.

Christmas in Cebu is a vibrant and joyful season, rich in traditions, gift-giving, and a deep appreciation for family. The warm-hearted spirit of Cebuanos is beautifully reflected in how they celebrate this particular time of the year. Whether you are a resident or a visitor, experiencing Christmas in Cebu is an unforgettable journey through a tapestry of traditions and flavors. It’s a time when the world stops for a moment, and the essence of love and togetherness takes center stage, making it truly magical for all who partake in the festivities.
