Authentic Hong Kong-style dining by Cantonese Chef KK Chan
by NIGEL GLENN BERMEJO
EZ Eats is a small and modest place that serves delicious authentic Hong Kong dishes prepared by an unassuming chef from Hong Kong, Chef partner KK Chan. With a lifelong dedication to his craft that began in his teenage years, Chef KK Chan brings his expertise to this charming establishment. He moved to Cebu to work as Head Chef of Hai Shin Lou of the Marco Polo hotel, following his tenure as Head of the Roasting Department at theMaxim group of restaurants in Hong Kong. He speaks very little English but the language of his masterfully created dishes tells the story.
Each dish at EZ Eats is a testament to culinary expertise. From the crispy yet tender pork belly and the pork char siu, which are notably free from any lingering fatty aftertaste, to the savory giant crab dish called the Curacha Platter, the plump giant prawns, and the Lapu Lapu, perfectly pan-fried to just the right texture and then generously drenched in a delicious light sauce, the execution is consistently well-executed. Upon serving, you may request to have the fish deboned. The Chinese broccoli, too, strikes a harmonious balance of tenderness and crunch. EZ Eats stands out for its classic Hong Kong Roasting delights of Roast Duck & Pigeon, reminiscent of the famous Hong Kong Yung Kee Restaurant. Chef Chan personally selects the freshest seafood treasures during early morning market visits.
EZ Eats takes great pride in offering an authentic taste of Hong Kong cuisine. Known as a favored destination for Cebuanos seeking the delightful flavors of Cantonese food, Hong Kong holds a special place in their hearts. For those unable to travel to the vibrant city to savor its culinary treasures, EZ Eats faithfully brings the essence of this beloved cuisine to your plate.
The restaurant owner and Chef Chan’s partner, Paul, is also from Hong Kong. He shared the intriguing history of EZ Eats, a daring venture established during the lockdown in 2020, officially welcoming its first patrons on October 19, including eager senior citizens seeking an outing. Whenever Paul travels to Hong Kong, he picks up unique ingredients and food items for the restaurant. Paul is very enthusiastic about this restaurant and believes the best advertising is word of mouth. Paul is a remarkable and inspirational figure in the industry, actively overseeing daily operations at the restaurant.
The restaurant is small and clean. The ambiance is minimalistic, free from extravagant decor or embellishments. With just five tables indoors, some accommodating four guests and others six, and a few additional ones outdoors, you can anticipate an exceptionally attentive staff providing friendly and professional service. It’s worth noting that some of the signature dishes require advance ordering, so planning ahead is advisable. Reservations are highly recommended to secure your dining experience. EZ Eats welcomes patrons from 10 AM to 7 PM, with the possibility of extending hours to 9 PM for group dining. Please be aware that the restaurant is closed on Mondays.
The food at EZ Eats is, in my opinion, undeniably delectable, leaving a lasting impression from the moment it’s presented to the very last bite on your plate. These dishes aren’t just a delight for your taste buds; they’re visually appealing as well. No wonder they attract upscale diners with discriminating tastes.
